Cocoa Beach Surf and Fishing Report for Monday June 11, 2012

COCOA BEACH, Fla. -- As of 7:00 a.m. on Monday June 11, 2012, jelly fish, including Portuguese Man-o-War,  are not present in the water throughout Cocoa Beach from Coconuts on the Beach northward to Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral.  However, prevailing easterly winds could push jelly fish near shore later in the day.

Look for purple flags flying at nearby lifeguard stations which would indicate the presence of jelly fish in the immediate area.  Red Flags indicate dangerous surf conditions including rip currents.

Sargasso seaweed is barely present on shore and in the water.

Winds are from the south this morning at 7 miles per hour.

A near shore current is still.

Breaking waves are 0-2 feet and semi-glassy.

Conditions for surf fishing will be better in the morning due to developing afternoon thunderstorms later in the day.  The ocean water is beginning to clear up.  Sand fleas remain in abundance along the beaches.

The small waves and clouded water is creating an environment where schools of bait fish are swimming close to shore to avoid predators - so bring your cast net.  But don't wade out into the middle of a school of bait fish as pictured above.  The reason the fish are at the surface of the water for the birds to easily catch is that there is a more dangerous predator in the water below the school.

If you are planning a land-based fishing trip today with friends and family, it would be better to fish from Jetty Park, Port Canaveral locks, Indian River Lagoon, or Sebastian Inlet rather than the open ocean.

In the open near-shore ocean waters, Sea Trout, Black Drum, Red Drum, Whiting and Pompano have been hitting up and down the Brevard County coastline and inlet mouths during the last four months from Sebastian Inlet to Port Canaveral.
