MELBOURNE, Florida -- At 10:21 am the Melbourne Police Department responded to a serious traffic crash involving a dump truck and a sports utility vehicle located at the intersection of Eau Gallie Boulevard (a.k.a State Road 518) and Guava Avenue.
According to witness accounts, the SUV was attempting to travel southbound on Guava Avenue and cross the two westbound lanes of Eau Gallie Boulevard when it was struck broadside by the dump truck.
The SUV was driven by an 80-year-old man with an 80-year-old woman as a passenger. Both of the elderly accident victims were transported to the Holmes Regional Trauma Center and are reported to be in critical, but stable, condition. The driver of the dump truck was uninjured.
At this point in the investigation, Melbourne police say that it appears the SUV violated the right-of-way of the dump truck.
