BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Karla Torpy, formerly with the Melbourne law firm of Moletteire & Torpy, is the new Director of Brevard County Animal Services and Enforcement and received unanimous confirmation Tuesday from the Brevard County Board of Commissioners.
Torpy's first day at the helm of Animal Services is Thursday.
Torpy, who spent 18 years practicing law in Brevard County, calls her new role an "essential mission to promote responsible pet ownership by promoting and protecting the health, safety and welfare of residents and animals in Brevard County."
Assistant County Manager Mel Scott said Torpy is a consummate professional with a track record of integrity.
"Adjectives I heard while speaking to her references were, 'well-spoken,' 'organized,' 'hard-working,' 'passionate' and 'extremely professional.' These core values will be a real asset to the organization she'll be joining," Scott said. "She will be charged with continuing to move the shelters forward and broadening and strengthening the county's investment in our community's animals. Expect to see continued re-branding of our shelters taking place and increased community outreach."
Assistant Department Director Kathy Beatson served as the Interim Director of Animal Services and Enforcement since July 2011.
