Saturday's $600 Million POWERBALL Jackpot Breaks Record

ORLANDO, Florida -- The estimate for Saturday's May 18, 2013 POWERBALL jackpot has steadily grown from $475 million to $550 million yesterday, to $600 million ($376.9 million cash value) today.  Lottery officials said that the increase was a result of player excitement translating into strong ticket sales.

$590.5 million Florida POWERBALL Winner To Come Forward Today

The jackpot, which already past the half-billion dollar mark, is now the largest jackpot in the POWERBALL history.  The second largest jackpot was won last Nov. 28, 2012, when a $587.5 million jackpot was shared by two tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri.

“Florida is one of the top-selling states for Powerball with the largest number of winners since joining the game in 2009.  We hope our players’ luck continues this weekend and that Florida has the next big jackpot winner!” said Florida Lottery Secretary O’Connell.  “Powerball ticket sales will benefit Florida’s students and schools and help our retailers grow their businesses to positively impact our state’s economy.”

When is the next POWERBALL drawing? The $600 million POWERBALL drawing will take place at the Florida Lottery Headquarters in Tallahassee at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time  /  9:59 p.m. Central Time  /  7:59 p.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, May 18, 2013.

Last Wednesday, there were power play winners who matched 5 of 5 numbers for $2 million from Delaware and Pennsylvania.  There were also winners from sixteen states who matched 5 of 5 numbers to win $1 million. Those states are: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Dakota and Virginia.

The overall odds of winning the POWERBALL jackpot are 1 in 175,223,510.

POWERBALL jackpot prizes are paid in 30 annual installments or as a one-time, lump-sum payment. Jackpot prizes must be claimed within the first 60 days after the winning draw to receive the cash option of $376.9 million. Winners have 180 days from the applicable drawing to claim their prize.

Since POWERBALL launched in Florida in January 2009, Florida has had the strongest POWERBALL and Power Play sales of any U.S. lottery, exceeding more than $1.8 billion and yielding $756 million in education funding to date.  Additionally, the Florida Lottery has had the most winners in the nation, winning more than $719 million in prizes, including five jackpot winners.
