DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - Robbed and then arrested is how deputies say an attempt to buy prescription pills on the street ended for a Daytona Beach, Florida man Sunday night who had two small children with him at the time.

Volusia County Deputies were dispatched to the parking lot of a Motel 6 on West International Speedway Boulevard near Daytona Beach after the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 7:02 p.m. reporting an armed robbery. The victim, 54-year-old Charles McDowell, initially said that he was in his pickup truck in the motel parking lot when a stranger came up and robbed him at gunpoint of his wallet, money and keys. Shortly afterwards, however, deputies say that McDowell came clean, admitting that he was there to buy pain pills from the man who robbed him.

The robbery suspect wasn’t located. However, deputies arrested McDowell on two counts of child abuse because he had two 6-year-old boys with him at the time of the incident. “Deputy Flynn determined McDowell’s actions placed the children’s lives in danger,” the deputy wrote in his report.

McDowell was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach on a $10,000 bond. The children were turned over to their mothers.
